Reduction in Land clearing effect gas emissions

Queensland Natural Resources Minister Craig Wallace states reductions in land clearing have cut the state's greenhouse gas emissions by the amount of 8.8 million tones over a 12-month period.

Mr. Wallace also stated land clearing rates dipped by 27 per cent during mid-2004 and mid-2005. He states that the ban on broad scale land clearing came into effect in January would even cause the figures to drop further.

"We expect to have beginning figures to display that reduction towards the end of this financial year but that's a huge boost for Queensland," he said.

Texas State Activates Additional Resources

"Rather than celebrating Independence Day at backyard barbeques with families and friends, many Texans spent the Fourth of July holiday battling the dangerous weather events that continue to impact their communities," Perry said. "We will continue to help local communities respond to emergencies and recover from the heavy storms and rains that have saturated a large part of our state and we will make sure the necessary resources are in place if the situation worsens."

Frightening storms are expected to make additional rain throughout a huge portion of the state. Potential storms may also re-establish over the area, where some locations are already wringing wet by previous storms, posing continued danger of spark flooding in several communities. Additionally, many reservoirs in these areas are currently at or near capacity to hold storm water and are releasing into the most important rivers. This situation has the latent to produce heavy flooding in many places not previously affected.

In expectation of continued storms, adding 71 attractive vehicles and more than 250 soldiers to assist with response efforts related to important flooding and other emergencies. Sixteen swift water release boat squads from Texas Task Force 1 and Texas Task Force 2 are position by to assist as needed.
